COSMETICS STILL LIFE
Last month I taught my kid's art class about rhythm in art, using the paintings of Matisse and the sounds of Jazz. Repeating sounds in intervals make rhythm in music, just as repetitions of color and shape make pattern in a painting. When I set up this still life of soap, nail polish and cosmetics, I was paying attention to the rhythm in this composition. The wonderful thing about teaching is, you learn more yourself.

'COSMETICS, AFTER MORANDI'
Giorgio Morandi is one of my favorite artists. He painted the same objects for years in
compressed compositions and elegant grays. I am trying to understand more about those paintings by setting up these small still life paintings with my cosmetics.

'REESE STACK 1'
I bought these for the trick or treaters (ha ha) and was playing with stacking and balancing them. Thought they would be interesting to paint, so I added background and lighting. It reminded me of staging a play with a solo performer.

'THE TWIST'
This was completed last Wednesday from two, 2 1/2 hour sessions with a model. I meet at a friend's art studio one evening a week and share the cost of a model with three other artists. We have a nice camaraderie and it's a friendly atmosphere. This model has been working with us on and off for about twenty years, and she can still do a long pose twist.
