COSMETICS STILL LIFE

Last month I taught my kid's art class about rhythm in art, using the paintings of Matisse and the sounds of Jazz. Repeating sounds in intervals make rhythm in music, just as repetitions of color and shape make pattern in a painting. When I set up this still life of soap, nail polish and cosmetics, I was paying attention to the rhythm in this composition. The wonderful thing about teaching is, you learn more yourself.

'NEW SHADE'

A visit to see Morandi's paintings at the Paul Thiebaud gallery in San Francisco last week, gave me fresh insights and inspiration.

'Figure Study, 2'

Its always a treat when Yoshio models for the Wednesday night Berkeley figurative group.
He is one of the marvelous bay area models who are artists as well.

'THE WHITE HAT'
The model for my weekly painting group brought the hat and bustier. It adds a dramatic element and interesting contrast.

This nail polish is named 'Shazam.' I thought it worthy of a solo. I hope I conveyed the little sparkles.

I always hold these back from the trick-or-treaters. They're so bad for their teeth. Oh... I just paint them.

'COSMETICS, AFTER MORANDI'

Giorgio Morandi is one of my favorite artists. He painted the same objects for years in
compressed compositions and elegant grays. I am trying to understand more about those paintings by setting up these small still life paintings with my cosmetics.

'REESE STACK 1'
I bought these for the trick or treaters (ha ha) and was playing with stacking and balancing them. Thought they would be interesting to paint, so I added background and lighting. It reminded me of staging a play with a solo performer.

'OPEN AND CLOSED'

Even in Northern California we get some beautiful changing leaves in the fall. I set these on a window sill, and watched them curl into sculptural shapes, one formed a cup and one closed in on itself.

'THE TWIST'
This was completed last Wednesday from two, 2 1/2 hour sessions with a model. I meet at a friend's art studio one evening a week and share the cost of a model with three other artists. We have a nice camaraderie and it's a friendly atmosphere. This model has been working with us on and off for about twenty years, and she can still do a long pose twist.
